Saving order
Where Your Money Should Go First, In Six Steps
Six steps, in sequence, with the arithmetic that puts each one where it is. The order matters more than the amounts, and I learned that the expensive way.

Saving order
Six steps, in sequence, with the arithmetic that puts each one where it is. The order matters more than the amounts, and I learned that the expensive way.

The break-even arithmetic is simple enough to do on a napkin, and it answers a narrower question than most people think. The survivor benefit is the part that changes the decision.

One per cent a year sounds like a rounding error and is not one. On a $500,000 balance over thirty years it is close to a million dollars of ending value, and most of that is compounding you never see.

Your contributions are yours from day one. The employer match sits on a timer, and the timer is a resignation date decision rather than an HR term.
The arithmetic favours putting the whole amount in immediately, and the arithmetic is not the only thing in the room. Both answers are defensible and only one of them is free.
Fourteen months of categories and a weekly spreadsheet saved me nothing I can point to. Four automatic transfers did the job in twenty minutes of setup.
It is two steps and it is legal, and most people who ask about it can simply contribute to a Roth directly. For the people who cannot, one rule decides whether it is free or expensive.
A SEP, a solo 401k and a SIMPLE all shelter self-employment income and give you wildly different amounts of room per dollar earned. On a modest profit the gap is roughly three to one.
A cash-out refinance reprices your entire mortgage, not just the money you take. A HELOC leaves it alone and hands you a variable rate instead. Both are secured on the place you sleep.
Direct and indirect rollovers move the same money to the same place. Only one of them can hand you a tax bill for a transaction you thought was neutral.
A balance that never moves still gets smaller every year, and the statement will never show you that. Here is the same money measured in dollars and then in what it buys.
A bond is a loan with a fixed payment and a fixed end date. Once you see why an old loan gets cheaper when new loans pay more, the price moves stop being mysterious.
One point on a $320,000 loan costs $3,200 and cuts the payment by $52.32 a month, which returns your money in month sixty-one. Buying two points breaks even in almost exactly the same month, and that is not an accident.
Having a workplace plan does not use up your IRA allowance. It changes one narrow thing, and people fold three separate questions into that one.
A regular brokerage account has no contribution limit and no rules about when you take the money out, and it charges you for that freedom every single year. The bill arrives as a tax form.
Four things can happen to the account and three of them are fine. The fourth is presented to you as the easy one.
There is one formula and it fits on a receipt: closing costs divided by monthly saving. On $6,400 of costs and $158.67 of saving, the refinance pays for itself in month forty-one and not a day sooner.
One form filled in at an HR onboarding session decides where your retirement account goes, and a will that says otherwise does not get a vote. Most people have not looked at theirs in years.
Principal and interest is where the calculator stops. Seven other costs arrive every month anyway, and together they run about half as much again.
Private mortgage insurance on a $360,000 loan at 0.6 per cent a year is $180 a month, and on the original schedule it runs about ninety-five months before you can ask for it to stop. That is $17,100 to not wait three years.
Two wrappers around an identical basket of stocks, from the same firm, tracking the same index. Three things separate them, and only one of them will ever cost you money.
The sequence is not a matter of taste and the arithmetic is not close. Fund the match first, then the college account, and here is what waiting five years actually costs.
Side income arrives whole and the tax bill arrives later, with an extra piece attached that most first-time freelancers have never heard of. Here is the arithmetic and the account that fixes it.
Savings accounts, certificates of deposit and Treasury bills all pay roughly similar rates and behave nothing alike when you need the money early. Access is the variable that decides it.
Plan names change, the two numbers do not: what you pay each month and what you pay in total. Stretching $40,000 from ten years to twenty-five saves $186 a month and costs $24,026.
The choice comes down to one subtraction, and for most households the answer is settled before they start keeping receipts. Here is how to find out which side of the line you are on.
Closing one card removed $5,000 from my available credit and moved my utilisation from 20 per cent to 30 per cent without changing my debt by a cent. The age effect is real too, and it arrives a decade late.
Strip out the noise and the whole choice comes down to your tax rate today against your tax rate when you withdraw. Everything else is a tiebreaker.
An index fund is a rule, a list and a copy of that list. Once you see how the weighting works, the top ten holdings stop being trivia and start being the actual answer to what you own.
A tax refund is your own money coming back after an interest free loan you did not agree to make. The fix is one form and takes about twenty minutes.
The limit is per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category, and the third one is where people get it wrong. A married couple at a single bank can cover a million dollars.
Dealers negotiate the monthly payment because it hides the price, the term and the trade all at once. Hold the payment fixed while the term stretches and you hand them $18,000 of room.
The belief that a raise can push you into a bracket and leave you with less money is the most persistent wrong idea in personal finance. One worked return kills it.
The most used scoring model publishes exactly how much each input counts, and two of the five explain almost two thirds of the number. Most of what people worry about is in the other three.
Your savings rate is variable, which means the bank can change it whenever it likes and usually does not tell you. The chain from the policy rate to your account has three links.
A 3 per cent transfer fee on $6,000 is $180, and at normal card rates it pays for itself in under two months. The number that decides whether the transfer works is a different one entirely.
Two of the cheapest policies you can buy cover two of the few events that can actually take everything. Most people under 35 have neither.
The extra room recovers less than most people hope and far more than nothing, and none of it depends on what you have already saved. Here is the arithmetic on fifteen years of it.
The formula is designed so the balance falls slowly, and it is legal, disclosed and printed on your statement every month. Switching to a fixed payment instead takes about a minute.
Disability insurance is the coverage almost nobody thinks about and almost everybody would need first. Most people have some through work and could not tell you what it pays.
